On November 20, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its naval forces had seized a foreign tanker involved in fuel smuggling off the coast of Parsian town within Iran’s waters in the Persian Gulf.
In a statement, Colonel Ahmad Hajian, commander of the 412th Zolfaghar Parsian Fotilla, said that 150,000 liters of smuggled fuel was seized and all the 11 members of the tanker’s foreign crew were handed over to judicial offices of Parsian.
The commander stressed that the IRGC will decisively counter fuel smuggling in the Persian gulf in order to support Iran’s economy.

The IRGC Navy intensified its anti-smuggling operations in the recent months. On October 24, a Vietnamese-flagged tanker involved in illegal activities was seized by the IRGC right in front of US Navy vessels.
The tanker was released on November 10 “after it was emptied of oil belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran,” according to the IRGC.
Iran’s recent naval operations were not only meant to counter smuggling, but also to reflect its influence in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Just a week ago, an Iranian helicopter made a bold low pass a few meters away from the US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf in a clear show of force.
