Late on May 22, a series of Israeli strikes hit alleged sites of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and in the eastern Beqaa Valley.
The strikes first hit the town of Toul in southern Lebanon. Ahead of the strike, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued an evacuation warning, claiming that a site of Hezbollah was located within the town. A warning strike was also carried out against the site.
Later, the strikes expanded to other parts of southern Lebanon and reached the heights near Bodai town in the Beqaa Valley.
No casualties were reported. However, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency described the strikes as “the most violent” since a ceasefire between the IDF and Hezbollah was brokered by the United States last November.
The IDF later announced in a statement that the strikes on Beqaa Valley targeted a site where rocket launchers and other weapons were stored, adding that Hezbollah activity was identified at the facility, and therefore it was struck.
Additionally, the IDF said that it struck Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon, without elaborating. The military warned that the presence of weapons and activity by Hezbollah “constitutes a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.”
The next day, the IDF revealed that the strikes targeted a total of 15 sites belonging to Hezbollah, and shared footage showing some of the strikes.
Hezbollah accepted the ceasefire proposed by the U.S. following a costly confrontation with the IDF. The confrontation broke out more than a year earlier as a result of the Israeli war on the group’s ally, Hamas, in the Gaza Strip.
The ceasefire, which entered into effect on November 27, was supposed to end all clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border by February 18. However, the IDF continued to launch strikes against Hezbollah. The military also kept troops at five strategic posts in southern Lebanon.
The IDF escalated its strikes this week, killing at least four members of Hezbollah between May 21 and 22. The group has so far refrained from responding, apparently out of fear of a new confrontation.
