On December 13, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released video footage of recent clashes with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip.
The footage, taken in the Zeitoun neighborhood in northern Gaza and the city of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Strip, show Palestinian fighters targeting main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers and bulldozers of the IDF with rocket-propelled grenades. They also show clashes with Israeli troops and sniper attacks.
The IDF announced the death of ten troops on December 13. Nine of them were killed in a single ambush in Shejaiya, a Gaza City suburb. The death of another Israeli soldier was announced on December 14.
The last losses brought the official death toll of Israeli troops since the start of ground operations in Gaza to 116. More than 600 other troops were wounded, some are reportedly still in a life-threatening condition.
The first phase of Israeli ground operations, which began on October 27, targeted northern Gaza. IDF troops occupied much of Gaza City, including the beach front, and established a presence in the city of Beit Lahia. As a result, the north was isolated.
Israel expanded ground operations in the outskirts of Gaza City and launched an offensive in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Strip after the week-long ceasefire in Gaza ended on December 1.
The IDF managed to occupy large parts of Gaza. However, this didn’t affect the capabilities of Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip, who continue to fire rockets and are actively improving their tactics.
