The Russian military destroyed an American-made M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launcher of Kiev forces right after it carried out an attack on Russian territories, the country’s Ministry of Defense announced on May 12.
“Scouts of the Sever group of forces revealed the location of the enemy’s multiple launch rocket system in the area of the settlement of Nagornovka in the Sumy region,” the ministry said in a brief statement, adding that “the system launched missiles at the city of Rylsk in the Kursk region.”
Video footage shared by the ministry showed the launcher being targeted by a Forpost-R combat drone with a KAB-20 light glide bomb, before being finished off along with a vehicle accompanying using an Iskander-M tactical ballistic missile.
The Forpost-R is a modernized variant of the original Forpost drone, which is a licensed copy of the Israeli IAI Searcher. This version is made from Russian components and has a domestic software. The drone has a takeoff weight of 500 kg, a range of 400 kilometers and an endurance of 18 hours at an altitude of up to 6,000 meters.
The KAB-20 is available in two versions, the Kab-20L that is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system, and the Kab-20S, which is also equipped with a semi-active laser seeker.
The bomb carries a seven kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead that is designed to engage manpower and lightly armored targets.
Meanwhile, The Iskander-M, which has been used to take out multiple HIMARS launchers so far, is said to have a range of nearly 500 kilometers.
The highly-maneuverable missile can be armed with different conventional warheads weighting 710-800 kg, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.
The missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
Since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, the United States has supplied Kiev forces with at least 39 HIMARS launchers. Last year, Germany promised to buy three more for Kiev forces.
These launchers are typically armed with M30/M31 series GMLRS GPS-guided rockets, which have a range of more than 70 kilometers, or MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles with a range between 165 and 300 kilometers depending on the version.
Most of Ukraine’s HIMARS launchers have been already destroyed or damaged by the Russian military. The rest have been very much rendered ineffective by a combination of Russian air defense systems and electronic warfare means.
