Another Russian missile strike hit on July 2 Mirgorod Air Base in Ukraine’s Poltava region, causing damage and casualties.
The strike was carried out using Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles and was coordinated using a drone. It destroyed a Mi-24 gunship helicopter, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which released footage of the strike on July 3. Unofficial Russian news sources also reported that 20 troops and technicians of Kiev forces were wounded.
More than 40 Mi-24/35 gunship helicopters are currently in service with Kiev forces. Many of these helicopters were delivered to Ukraine after the start of the Russian special military operation some two years ago, by the Czech Republic, Poland and North Macedonia.
Just a day earlier, a strike with multiple Iskander-M missiles destroyed five Su-27 fighter jets of the Ukrainian Air Force and damaged two others in Mirgorod Air Base.
The recent strikes on the key air base highlighted the Russian military ability to strike any target with Ukraine with high precision at any time. The strikes also exposed how much the air defenses of Kiev forces have been degraded.
The Iskander-M missile used in the recent strikes has a range of nearly 500 kilometers. It can be armed with different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel–air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions.
The highly-maneuverable missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
