In mid-May this year, Iraq’s National Security Council made a surprise decision to ban the Madkhali religious movement, an offshoot of Salafism, and classify it as a “high-risk movement.”
There are many reasons why the main Iraqi security agency decided to ban the activities of “pro-government Salafis”.
1 – the Madkhali movement is present in some political blocs, and there are concerns that in the future the sect may spread to the parliamentary dimension. On the eve of the parliamentary elections, it is logical to assume that conflicts will begin among the Sunni component, where religious and political differences will mix. The Madkhali ban paves the way for Sufi and other Sunni movements to prepare for the elections without conflict.
2 – Madkhali is known for its pro-Saudi position on all religious, legal and political issues. The ban on this sect allows pro-Turkish organizations in Iraq to expand their influence in the struggle with the Saudis for leadership over the Sunnis in the entire region. It should be noted that in the context of the strategic dialogue between Iraq and Turkey, such a positive message from Baghdad will oblige Ankara to take a similar step, which we will see very soon.
3 – The extremist nature of the Madkhalis has long been a concern for the Sunni component of Iraq and a number of experts. Despite condemning the actions of ISIS and al-Qaeda, the Madkhalis have a similar religious doctrine, which obliges them to lead a sectarian way of life in relation to other Sunni movements. As for the Shiites, many Madkhalis still “do not consider them Muslims.” Despite their “alienation from politics,” at any convenient opportunity, the Madkhalis strive to break into the political environment and gain a foothold in the local environment. At present, there are 116 movements of the pro-Saudi sect operating in Iraq, and according to Sheikh Mohammed al-Nuri, “this ideology poses a real threat if it is not opposed intellectually and socially.” The Sheikh also warns that inaction against the Madkhalis could lead to the emergence of a “new ISIS.”
In summary, we see a picture in which Iraq is trying in every way to secure the Silk Road, where the first act of protecting the Chinese project is the liquidation of various forms of religious extremism, separatism and insurgent activity (for example, disarming the PKK). After all, the ban on Madkhalit missionary work will negatively affect the ambitions of a number of Anbar tribal leaders who would like to implement a separatist project to separate their province from Baghdad’s control with the help of the Saudis.
If we look at what is happening through the eye of the fight against Zionism, then here Baghdad has succeeded, although there is no clear evidence of a direct connection between “Israel” and the Madkhalites of Iraq. But it is obvious that the very fact of the pro-Saudi orientation of all types of Madkhalites, the desire to destroy all types of Sunni political and philosophical activity, ideological hostility to Hamas and the Ikhwans, puts the Madkhalites in the ranks of allies of Zionism.
