Hungary to hold referendum on EU refugee quota plan: Prime Minister

On Wednesday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Hungary is going to call a national referendum on the European Union’s plan for mandatory relocation of refugees in EU countries.

“The government has decided to hold a referendum on the mandatory distribution quota issue,” Viktor Orban said.

According to Orban the question will be “Do you want the European Union to prescribe the mandatory settlement of non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary even without the consent of Parliament?”

Last September, the EU interior ministers set quotas during a meeting in Brussels and Viktor Orbans right-wing party has been against the EU plan.

On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration said that so far this year more than 100,000 refugees have crossed the Mediterranean to Greece and Italy. At least, a million reached Europe last year that created the worst refugee crisis for Europe in decades.
