On March 1, al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, said that its militants killed several soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) during a recent raid in the western countryside of Aleppo.
The target of the raid was a frontline position located near the government-held town of Urum al-Sughra. The terrorist group didn’t clarify when exactly the raid took place. However, it said that all six personnel who were manning the position were killed and that the position itself was blown up by its militants before they withdrew.
The announcement came just two days after a similar raid that targeted a key position of the SAA on Taurus mountain in the northern Latakia countryside. Ten Syrian soldiers were killed and three 152 mm howitzers were destroyed during the raid, according to claims by the terrorist group.
HTS escalated its attacks against the SAA in December in an apparent response to Russian efforts to restore ties between Ankara, who maintains forces in Greater Idlib, and Damascus. The terrorist group’s views Turkish military presence in the region as an obstacle in the face of any new large-scale ground operation by the army and its allies.
Despite HTS’s recent provocations, the Turkish-Syrian normalization process is still ongoing. Work is now underway to organize a meeting between the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, Iran and Syria.
A Turkish military withdrawal from Greater Idlib is reportedly one of several demands Damascus made to Ankara in order to normalize relations. Even a partial withdrawal would pave the way for the SAA and its allies to neutralize HTS and other terrorist groups in the region.
