Houthis Showcase Remains Of Two US ScanEagle Drones Shot Down Over Yemen Recently

Screen grab from the Houthis’ footage.

On June 23, the Houthis (Ansar Allah) shared footage showing the remains of two US drones which were shot down over the central Yemeni province of Ma’rib very recently.

The drones, both identified as Boeing Insitu ScanEagle 2, were shot down with ground-to-air missiles over the district of Sirwah. The first drone was downed on June 20, while the second was shot down two days later.

The ScanEagle 2, which entered service with the U.S. military in 2014, has a top speed of 148 km and an endurance of more than 16 hours.

The drone is mainly used for reconnaissance missions. It is equipped a day and night capable sensor, a fully digital video system and an advanced navigation system.

The US drones were likely spying on the Houthis, which have been leading a large-scale offensive against the Saudi-led coalition and its proxies in Ma’rib for well over three months. Earlier this year, Washington claimed that it had ended “offensive” support for the coalition.

The successful shot down of two US drones within three days highlights the Houthis’ growing air-defense capabilities. These capabilities have begun to pose a real threat to hostile warplanes and drones flying over Yemen.
