The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen released on June 30 video footage documenting the attack on the Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned and operated bulk cargo carrier Transworld Navigator in the Red Sea.
The vessel was attacked on June 23 because its owners violated the Houthis’ blockade on Israel and continued to ship goods to the country.
A new type of uncrewed suicide boat dubbed “Tufan Al-Mudamir” [Destructive Flood in Arabic] was used in the attack on the vessel. .
The video released by the Houthis showed a direct hit on the vessel. The United States Central Command reported at the time of the attack that the vessel’s crew reported minor injuries and damage after the attack. However, it claimed at the time that the vessel continued its journey.
“We renew our advice to the crews of the ships owned by companies violating the decision to ban navigation to the ports of occupied Palestine [Israel] to abandon these ships because they have become a target for us,” the Houthis warned in the video. “We confirm that our operations will continue in an escalation against all violating ships and companies as long as the Zionist aggression against the Gaza Strip continues.”
Footage showing tests of the Tufan Al-Mudamir boat were also included in the video. In the tests, the boat is seen navigating its way through a marked path with a width of no more than ten meters with high accuracy, all while executing impressive maneuvers.
Tufan Al-Mudamir appears to be equipped with an electro-optical target acquisition system as well as a two-way data link, making among the most advanced uncrewed suicide boats to have been showcased by the Houthis, so far.
The Houthis said that the new boat travels at a speed of up to 45 nautical miles and can be armed with a warhead weighing 1,000-1,500 kg.
Since last November, the Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities, but to no avail.
Tufan Al-Mudamir is the second new uncrewed suicide boats to be unveiled by the Houthsi this month. The first one, dubbed “Tufan-1,” was present on June 21.
