The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on April 7 that they had attacked a British-owned merchant ship and two others which were heading to Israeli ports in addition to several warships of the United States Navy over the past 72 hours in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and as a response to recent American-British strikes on Yemen.
The British-owned ship Hope Island was targeted in the Red Sea with a number of “naval missiles,” Houthi military spokesman, Brigade General Yahya Sarea, said in a statement, adding that the MSC Grace F and the MSC Gina, which were heading to Israel, were targeted in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, respectively, using “ballistic and winged missiles.”
Two attacks with suicide drones also targeted a number of U.S. Navy warships in the Red Sea, according to the spokesman.
“The Yemeni armed forces will continue to implement the decision to blockade Israeli vessels, or those linked to the Israeli enemy, or heading to the ports of occupied Palestine in the Red and Arab Seas and the Indian Ocean until the aggression is stopped and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted,” Brig. Gen. Sarea said.
Earlier, British security firm Ambrey said it had received information indicating that a vessel was attacked on Sunday in the Gulf of Aden about 102 nautical miles southwest of the port of Mukalla in Yemen.
“Vessels in the vicinity were advised to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity,” the firm said, without identifying who was responsible for the attack or providing any further details.
Separately, a missile landed near a vessel in the Gulf of Aden but there was no damage to the ship or injuries to crew in the incident, 59 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Aden, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
“The Master of the vessel reports a missile impacted the water in close proximity to the vessel’s port quarter,” UKMTO said in an advisory note. “No damage to the vessel reported and crew reported safe,” it added.
The agency, which is a detachment of the Royal Navy, did not say who fired the missile at the vessel or provide further details.
The U.S. Central Command didn’t report any interceptions over the last three days. However, the allies European Union’s naval mission in the Red Sea said on April 6 it had intercepted a Houthi missile to protect merchant ships.
In a press release, the EU’s mission, known as Aspides, said that the German frigate “Hessen” had intercepted a missile attack from Houthi controlled territories.
“The action performed by Hessen was effective, avoiding any damage to seafarers and merchant shipping,” it added.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since last November in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
In an attempt to deter the Houthis, the U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. At least 37 people were killed in these strikes. Nevertheless, the Houthis responded by expanding their operations to include the Indian Ocean.
