Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces [a key ally of the Houthis], presented new videos showing the Qaesf-2k suicide unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during a press briefing on January 14.
One of the videos shows the UAV exploding over its target during a test. In two other videos, Qasef-2k can be seen attacking two gatherings of Saudi-backed forces in the Kingdom’s southern provinces of Asir and Jizan. Both attacks occurred in the last few days.
According to Brig. Gen. Sari, Qasef-2k has a heavy high-explosive fragmentation (HE-frag) warhead that explodes 10 to 20 meters over the target. The warhead’s blast radius is more than 150 meters.
Three days ago, the Houthis used Qasef-2k in an attack on a military parade of Saudi-backed forces in the southern Yemeni district of al-Anad. Several senior commanders were killed in the attack, including Head of Yemeni Military Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Saleh Tamah.
Experts believe that Qasef-2k is a slightly upgraded copy of the Qasef-1 UAV, which is a direct copy of the Iranian Ababil-2. The drone’s operational range is likely around 100km.
Brig. Gen. Sari revealed that the Houthis and their allies are now producing one Qasef-2k every day. He went on to claim that the available quantities of the suicide UAV will allow the Yemeni group to use them on several fronts soon.
“Yemen has surpassed many unnamed aerial vehicles (UAV) manufacturers in the region,” the Yemeni Armed Forces’ spokesman added.
In the upcoming days, the Houthis and their allies will reveal new types of UAVs and advanced missiles, according to Brig. Gen. Sari. Observers believe that this will likely lead to more tension with the Saudi-led coalition.
