The Houthis (Ansar Allah) have launched more missiles at Israel’s southernmost city of Eilat and vowed to target Israeli ships near Yemen in support of the Gaza Strip.
In a statement released late on November 14, Houthi spokesman Brigade General Yahya Sari said that a batch of ballistic missiles were launched against various Israel targets, including sensitive ones located in Eilat.
The launch came “after 24 hours of another military operation by drones on the same Israeli targets,” the spokesperson added.
Incoming missile sirens sounded two times in Eilat and nearby areas on November 14. After the second warning, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that a surface-to-surface missile, believed to have been launched from Yemen, was intercepted by the Arrow air defense system over the Red Sea.
The Houthis, who control a large part of Yemen and maintain a large arsenal of missiles and drones, are part of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” which is backed by Iran and opposes Israel. Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, the Houthis have been launching attacks with missiles and drones against Israel.
In a move that could lead to more escalation, Brig. Gen. Sari vowed in his statement that the Houthis “will not hesitate to target any Israeli ship in the Red Sea or at any other place” they could reach.
The threat came just hours after Abdulmalik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthis, said that the group was searching for Israeli ships.
“Our eyes are open to constantly monitor and search for any Israeli ship in the Red Sea, especially in Bab al-Mandab, and near Yemeni regional waters,” Abdulmalik said in a broadcast speech.
Israel is yet to retaliate to the recent attacks from Yemen. It is very possible that the IDF is planning strikes or raids against high-value targets of the Houthis. However, such military actions will not likely deter the battle-hardened group. In fact, they could lead to even more escalation.
