The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen announced on February 15 that they had attacked a British commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden.
“We carried out a military operation against a British ship, Lycavitos, while it was sailing in the Gulf of Aden,” Brigade General Yahya Sarea, the Houthi military spokesman, said in a statement.
The Houthis launched a number of “suitable naval missiles” that hit the ship “directly and accurately,” according to the spokesman.
“We will continue to attack Israel-linked ships or those heading to Israeli ports in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege on the Palestinian people is lifted,” Brig. Gen. Sarea said.
“We are in the process of taking further military measures in response to the American-British aggression on our country and confirming our practical position to support the Palestinian people,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom Maritime Operations Authority (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, said that it received a report of an explosion around 85 nautical miles east of Aden. The ship’s captain reported that the crew members were all safe as the ship headed toward its next port.
Separately, the British maritime security firm Ambrey said that the ship suffered minor damage after being struck by an explosive projectile some 100 nautical miles east of Yemen’s port city of Aden. Crew members were unharmed and damage from shrapnel was contained to the vessel, the firm said.
The Barbados-flagged Lycavitos is managed by Helikon Shipping Enterprises, which has offices in London, Athens and Dalian, China.
Helikon said in a response that the vessel was Greek-owned and that details issued earlier by the UKMTO were “informative”, without providing further details.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the UK in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 28,000 Palestinians.
The U.S. and the UK retaliated by carrying out dozens of strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen over the last few weeks.
The attack on Lycavitos came just hours after the U.S. Central Command announced another wave of strikes against the Houthis. This shows that the group’s capabilities are still intact.
