The Houthis conducted a surprise attack in the northwestern province of Hajjah on January 26 and managed to capture 15 positions south of the al-Nar mount from the Saudi-led coalition and its Yemeni proxies, according to the al-Masirah TV.

“A state of confusion is prevailing among the mercenaries … Their fighters fled from the battlefield in masses,” the Yemeni TV channel quoted Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari, a spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces, as saying.

During the attack, Houthi fighters killed 19 personnel of Saudi-backed forces, including 7 field commanders, and injured 30 others. Al-Masirah said that the bodies of the dead fighters and commanders were transported to the Samtah hospital in southern Saudi Arabia.

Brig. Gen. Yahya Sari said that warplanes of the Saudi-led coalition carried out 5 airstrikes on the district of Harad, where al-Nar mount is located. These airstrikes were likely a response to the successful attack.

The Houthis stepped up their attacks in northern and central Yemen in the recent few weeks in what appears to be an attempt to pressure the Saudi-led coalition ahead of the upcoming round of peace talks.
