Yemen’s Houthi (Ansar Allah) released on August 29 video footage of their fighters boarding the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion in the Red Sea.
Sounion was first attacked by the Houthis on August 21. It was carrying some 1 million barrels of oil at the time. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a detachment of the Royal Navy, Sounion was targeted four times during the attack.
Initially, fighters on small boats opened fire at the oil tanker with small arms some 90 nautical miles west of the Yemeni port city of al-Hodeida, which is held by the Houthis. Three projectiles later struck the tanker, sparking a fire and forcing the crew to evacuate. No casualties were reported, however.
The Houthis said that the Sounion was attacked because its owners violated their blockade on Israel and continued to ship goods to the country amid the war on the Gaza Strip.
The newly-released footage shows masked Houthi fighters boarding the Sounion after it was abandoned. The fighters then rigged explosives in the tanker’s bridge and over hatches on the deck leading to the oil tanks below. At least six simultaneous blasts could be seen in the footage.
The fighters chant their motto as the bombs detonated aboard the oil tanker: “God is the greatest; death to America; death to Israel; curse the Jews; victory to Islam.”
Since November, the Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the UK in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on Gaza.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched an attack against al-Hodeidah last month after a deadly drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv.
Still, the Houthis’ latest attacks, including the boarding of Sounion, show that the Iran-backed group was not deterred in any way.

i’m not impressed with intentional oil spills. i would be much more impressed if they stole all the oil and sold it to europe first, then sank the ship.
