Two high-ranking officers of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces were killed in Houthi strikes that targeted the Red Sea port of Mukha in western Yemen on August 10.
At least seven people were killed and 35 others were wounded in the strikes, in which the Houthis launched more than two dozen guided artillery rockets and one-way attack drones at the port and its surroundings. The Houthis said that the strikes hit “Saudi military concentrations and weapons depots.”
Among those killed was Col. Yahya Mohammed al-Qadi, a relative of National Resistance commander and Presidential Leadership Council member Tareq Saleh. His death was announced by the National Resistance in Mukha.
The second slain officer was identified—based on obituaries published on social media—as Col. Rami Mohammed Qassem Jubran al-Hujaili, the son of the late Brig. Gen. Mohammed Qassem Jubran al-Hujaili, who served as deputy director of the Yemeni armed forces’ technical department.
The two officers were likely targeted intentionally by the Houthis, as that same day, the governor of Hodeidah province, al-Hassan Taher, survived an assassination attempt when a Houthi guided artillery rocket targeted his residence in the government-held al-Khawkhah district of western Yemen.
Also on August 10, a Houthi drone strike killed two Yemeni government soldiers and wounded seven others in the province of Shabwa in south-central Yemen.
The group launched another strike against Mukha on August 11 while simultaneously targeting the city of Marib in central Yemen. No casualties were reported, however.
Yemeni government forces, in a series of posts on X, said they targeted Houthi positions in the province of al-Jawf in eastern Yemen, as well as in Saada province in the north and the al-Tibas area of Marib. The Saudi-led coalition, for its part, took no action.
The Houthis announced a “maritime blockade” against Saudi Arabia last month, and since then, the group has carried out a series of attacks targeting Saudi airports, oil facilities, Yemeni government forces, and tankers in the Red Sea.
Saudi Arabia is reported to be preparing an offensive against the Houthis, including a potential ground operation led by the Yemeni government. At the same time, the kingdom is reportedly engaged diplomatically through Oman in an attempt to de-escalate.
