Hezbollah on April 6 released video footage showing its fighters shooting down a Hermes 450 combat drone of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) using a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS).
The drone was shot down five days earlier, over the town of Aainata in southern Lebanon. The footage released by Hezbollah indicates that an imaging infrared search and tracking system was used to detect the drone.
The MANPADS that took down the drone was likely a North Korean HG-7. Not much is known about the heat-seeking anti-aircraft missile, but it is believed to be a copy of the Soviet Igla-1, which has a range of 5 kilometers and a flight ceiling of 3,5 kilometers.
The IDF seized one such MANPADS from Hezbollah during the previous war in Lebanon, which broke out as a result of the war on the Gaza Strip. The group likely received the missiles through Iran and Syria, not directly from North Korea.
The Hermes 450 is a medium-sized multi-payload drone designed by Israeli defense company Elbit for tactical long-endurance missions.
The drone, which reportedly cost more than $2 million, has an endurance of over 20 hours, with a primary mission of reconnaissance, surveillance, combat and communications relay. Payload options include electro-optical/infrared sensors, communications and electronic intelligence, synthetic-aperture radar/ground-moving target indication, electronic warfare, and hyperspectral sensors.
This was the second time Hezbollah has managed to shoot down a Hermes 450 since the start of the ongoing confrontation, which began more than a month ago following the American-Israeli war on Iran. The first drone was shot down over the town of Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon on March 16. Keeping with strict censorship rules, the IDF has not denied or confirmed these aerial losses.
Hezbollah is clearly still in possession of effective MANPADS, in addition to a capable imaging infrared search and tracking system.
These capabilities will pose a serious challenge not just to IDF combat drones. In fact, the group has already announced targeting several attack helicopters and even fighter jets. It may be just a matter of time before the group manages to score a kill against a manned aircraft.
