Hezbollah Mourns Two Fighters As Israel Makes More Threats To Lebanon

Hezbollah mourned two of its fighters on February 4, amid ongoing clashes with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on the Lebanese-Israeli border.

The group announced the death of the fighters, Abbas Ali Mubarak and Mohammad Jawdat Yahia, in two separate statements, saying that they were killed “on the road to Jerusalem,” a term it usually uses to refer to those killed by the IDF in Lebanon or Syria during the current confrontation.

The death of the two fighters brought the number of Hezbollah personnel who have been killed since the border clashes broke out to 168.

Hezbollah and its allies began launching attacks against the IDF from southern Lebanon just a day after the war broke out in the Gaza Strip on October 7. While the group took most of the losses, its allies also lost dozens of fighters. 28 fighters and commanders of the Hamas Movement and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad have been killed in Lebanon, so far.

On the Israeli side, six civilians and nine soldiers of the IDF have been killed since the clashes on the border with Lebanon first broke out.

The border clashes have displaced more than 80,000 Israelis from the country’s north, prompting calls by radicals there for escalation against Lebanon.

On February 3, the IDF issued its most detailed warning yet to Hezbollah, saying that it would be “ready to attack immediately” if provoked.

“We do not choose war as our first priority, but we are certainly prepared,” military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said, adding: “We will continue to act wherever Hezbollah is present, we will continue to act wherever it is required in the Middle East. What is true for Lebanon is true for Syria, and is true for other more distant places.”

The comments followed a warning by the Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant that a cease-fire in Gaza wouldn’t mean the IDF wouldn’t attack Hezbollah as needed.

The United States, France and several other countries have been making efforts to broker a diplomatic agreement between Israel and Lebanon to end the border clashes. However, Hezbollah officials insist that this will only be possible after the end of the Israeli war on Gaza.
