Hezbollah announced early on September 13 that it had launched a barrage of rockets at a key air defense base of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) near the city of Safed, which is located some 13 kilometers away from the border with Lebanon.
In a statement, the group said that it targeted the Birya with “Katyusha” rockets in support of the Palestinian people and resistance in the Gaza Strip as well as in response to a recent Israeli strike on the southern Lebanese town of Kfarjoz. The strike, which took place on September 12 afternoon, claimed the lives of two Hezbollah fighters and a child. Three other people were wounded.
From its side, the IDF said that some 20 rockets were launched from Lebanon at Safad, with most of them being intercepted.
No injuries were reported in the rocket barrage, the military added. However, the rocket fire sparked a blaze in the Birya Forest, north of Safed, according to Hebrew media. A rocket fragment also caused minor damage to a building in the nearby settlement of Dalton.
In response to the barrage, the IDF said that it struck several buildings used by Hezbollah in the towns of Aitaroun, Marimin and Chihne in addition to a rocket launcher of the group in the town of Zibqin in southern Lebanon. No casualties were reported by Lebanese media.
Hezbollah and its allies have been launching attacks against Israel in support of the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza since the outbreak of the war on the Strip last October.
So far, the limited confrontation has resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 20 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 870 people have been killed, including 438 fighters of Hezbollah and over 150 civilians.
