Hezbollah announced on August 21 a series of attacks against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in response to recent strikes on Lebanon and the ongoing war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
Overnight, Israeli strikes killed or wounded more than 20 people in southern and eastern Lebanon. The deaths included five fighters of Hezbollah.
In an initial response, Hezbollah shelled a border site and a barracks of the IDF then fired a barrage of dozens of rockets at a logistical base in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights. At least one person was wounded in these attacks.
The group later attacked the reserve headquarters of the IDF’s Northern Corps, the Galilee Division reserve basse and logistics depots in Amiad with suicide drones. The IDF said that only some of the drones were shot down. No casualties were reported by Hebrew media.
In addition, Hezbollah fired rockets at a headquarters of the IDF’s Golani Brigade in the Ramim barracks, struck a main battle tank with a guided missile in the al-Abbassiyah site, targeted gatherings of Israeli troops close to the site of Misgav Am and shelled the site of al-Malikiyah with artillery. It is still unclear if any of these attacks resulted in casualties.
From its side, the IDF claimed responsibility for a strike that killed Munir Makdah, an official of the Palestinian Fateh movement, in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon. Makdah has been accused by Israel for years of working with Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to advance attacks on Israel.
In a joint statement, the IDF and Shin Bet security agency said that the Makdah brothers have been working out of Lebanon with the IRGC to transfer money and weapons to terror cells in the West Bank.
Hezbollah and its allies in Lebanon have been launching attacks against the IDF in support of Gaza since the start of the Israeli war on the Strip last October.
So far, the confrontation has resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 19 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 700 people have been killed, including 401 fighters of Hezbollah and over 130 civilians.
