On January 25, Hezbollah escalated attacks against the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) by targeting an Iron Dome air defense system near the northern Israeli settlement of Kfar Blum.

The system was targeted with two suicide drones, the Iranian-backed group said in a statement, noting that the attack was carried out in “to support the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their brave and honorable resistance.”

In the hours leading to the attack, Hezbollah announced that it fighters targeted two Israeli military sites along the border with Lebanon, Jal al-Alam and al-Radar.

A spokesman for the IDF said that two “aerial targets,” believed to be drones, entered Israeli airspace from southern Lebanon and impacted open areas in northern Israel. The spokesman confirmed that the drones hit areas near Kfar Blum, but didn’t report damage or injuries.

In response to the drone attack, the IDF said that it had carried out a series of strikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, including an airstrip used by the group in the Qalaat Jabbour mountain region. Other targets near the towns of Tyre and Mghairiyeh were also hit.

The airstrip, revealed by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant last year, served Hezbollah’s aerial unit, according to the IDF. Israel accused Iran of building the airstrip, which is thought to be used by the group to launch drones.

The IDF announced a second wave of strikes on southern Lebanon later in the day. It said that tanks fired at two sites belonging to Hezbollah in the towns of Tayr Harfa and Ayta al-Shab, while a site in the town Kafr Kila and an observation post in the town Blida were hit by a fighter jet. Areas near the town of al-Dhahiriya were also shelled with artillery, according to the IDF.

The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in Gaza, with Hezbollah and its allies carrying out attacks in support of the Strip.

As of January 25, the clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border have resulted in six civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of nine IDF soldiers. On the Lebanese side, more than 200 have been killed. The toll includes 156 Hezbollah fighters, 14 of whom were killed in Syria, 28 Palestinians, a Lebanese soldier, and at least 24 civilians.
