On March 15, Syrian and Russian warplanes carried out a series of heavy airstrikes against ISIS cells in Syria’s central region.
One of the strikes hit a cave in which several terrorists were taking shelter. Syrian pro-government activists who shared video footage of the strike said that the targeted terrorists had received training at the United States al-Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria.
ISIS cells in the central region, which lies between the eastern Homs countryside and the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, escalated their attacks in recent months.
According to a report released by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on March 16, the terrorists have carried out ten attacks in the region over the past five days. The London-based monitoring group said that the attacks claimed the lives of a civilian woman and 18 pro-government fighters. Ten other people were wounded in the attacks.
Syria and its allies have already begun taking measures to counter the terrorist group. The elite 4th Division and other formations of the Syrian Arab Army have been amassing a large, heavily-armed force in the central region for the last few weeks.
Everything indicates that government forces are preparing to launch a large-scale operation against ISIS cells.
The government launched dozens of combing operations in the region in recent years. However, this time it appears that a fully-fledged military operation is being prepared.
ISIS cells have been waging an insurgency in central Syria for over six years now. Ending the terrorist group presence there will not be easy. The terrorists receive serious support from their comrades in the northeastern region, which is held by the U.S. and its proxies.
In addition, Syrian and Russian officials have accused U.S. forces in al-Tanf of training and even arming terrorists, including members of ISIS, on several occasions in the past.
