On October 19, the Palestinian Hamas Movement said that it restored relations with the Syrian government after a visiting delegation held a “historic meeting” with President Bashar al-Assad in the capital, Damascus.

Hamas declared its support for the Syrian opposition and closed its offices in Damascus early on in the Syrian crisis. Later, Damascus accused the Islamic organization of providing support to the rebels in Palestinian refugee camps in different parts of the country.

“This is a glorious and important day, in which we come back to our dear Syria to resume joint work,” Hamas chief of Arab relations Khalil al-Hayya told reporters in Damascus after meeting with Assad along with other representatives of Palestinian factions.

Al-Hayya added that Hamas and Assad have agreed to “move on from the past and look to the future.” The official didn’t clarify what will be the next joint step for the two sides.

In a statement to the Beirut-based al-Mayadeen TV, al-Hayya revealed the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah played a key role in organizing the breakthrough meeting with Assad in Damascus. The official also revealed that Turkey and Qatar, both are allies of Hamas and foes of Assad, blessed the movement decision to restore ties with Syria.

While meeting with Hamas officials and the rest of the Palestinian delegation, Assad stressed that the unity of Palestinian factions is the base of their strength in the face of Israel.

“Despite the war that Syria is facing, it has not changed its positions in support of the resistance in any way,” the Syrian president said while meeting with the Palestinian delegation.

Talk of a reconciliation between Syria and Hamas first emerged in June, and later, in September, the movement officially confirmed its intent to restore ties with Syria.

Before the outbreak of the war in Syria, Hamas received massive financial and military support from the country. The two sides also coordinated against Israel on the highest levels.

Hamas decision to restore ties with Syria is meant to strengthen its stand and against Israel as well as its position within the so-called Axis of Resistance. Tel Aviv will likely view the relations between Hamas and Syria as a threat, and act in accordance.

It seems quite likely that Hamas has made the move according to the wishes of the Turkish admin. The attacks on Syria by the isreali apartheid regime only shows neighbouring countries what they can expect should they fall out with washingtub or delay the ‘greater isreal’.

Could be a game changer.
