A series of Israeli strikes last week killed Muhammad Sinwar, the de facto military leader of the Hamas Movement in the Gaza Strip, the Saudi-owned news channel Al-Hadath reported on May 18.
Muhammad is the younger brother of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during a firefight with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza last October. Yahya was seen by Israel as the mastermind behind the 7 October surprise attack on Israel in 2023, which sparked the war in the Strip.
The strikes that reportedly killed Muhammad on May 13 targeted an underground command compound below the European Hospital where he was allegedly taking shelter. The Hamas-run health ministry reported 16 dead and over 70 wounded in the strikes.
The IDF continued to target the area for the next few days, in an apparent attempt to prevent anyone from approaching the tunnel.
According to Al-Hadath, Muhammad body was recently recovered along with the remains of ten of his aides. The channel said that there was evidence that the commander of the Rafah Brigade in Hamas’s military wing, Muhammad Shabana, was also killed.
While the IDF has not yet confirmed the death Muhammad, Defense Minister Israel Katz told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on May 18 that he believes the leader was killed in last week’s strikes.
“There’s no official confirmation, but according to all the indications Muhammad Sinwar was eliminated,” Katz said, according to leaks to Hebrew media.
Muhammad was jailed by Israel in the 1990s for nine months. He later spent an additional three years in a Palestinian Authority prison in Ramallah, from which he escaped in 2000. In 2006, Sinwar was a member of the Hamas cell that abducted IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. He also previously commanded Hamas’s Khan Younis Brigade.
After the killing of Yahya, Mohammad became the de-facto military leader of Hamas in Gaza. He was reported to be one of the obstacles in the talks on a new ceasefire and hostage agreement.
Separately, Palestinian media reported on May 18 that Zakaria Sinwar, the brother of Yahya and Muhammad, was killed a day earlier in an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. He was killed along with three of his children in a strike on the tent where they were residing. Zakaria worked as a lecturer at the Islamic University in Gaza. He was not involved in any military activities.
If confirmed, the killing of Muhammad would be another blow to Hamas. However, it will not likely affect the group’s military operations or its political stance.
