Earlier reports appeared that the last group of militants were set to leave Zabadani on Wednesday.

The liberation of Zabadani, Madaya, Buqayn, Sirghaya and Ayn al-Hawr is an important step in the long-run government campaign aimed at securing the Damascus countryside.

Following this success, the Syrian army and its allies will focus on other pockets remaining near Damascus:

  • The Bayat Jinn-Mazraat Bayt-Mughr al-Mir pocket southwest of Damascus and the Kanakir pocket south of  Damascus look as obvious targets for government efforts;
  • The liberation of the Qabun area and the Eastern Ghouta region are also important goals.

Xanatos

This is not a military victory. Trading two besieged towns for two towns under siege. It doesnt change the balance of power.

@ Xanatos,

But it does free up dire needed manpower.

The overview forgets to mention one rebel held area in the Damascus region: the area in South Damascus that includes Yarmouk camp. This is quite a big area. A few months ago it was reported that the most eastern part of it had been changed from armistice to government held. And recently there were reports that the present exchange also included the transfer of some rebels from Yarmouk to Idlib.
