Forces loyal to the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) announced on September 20 that they had shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near the country’s capital, Tripoli.

“Our heroic forces in the axis of Ain Zara shot down today, Friday, a surveillance and observation drone of the militias of the rebel war criminal Haftar,” GNA forces’ operations room said in a press release.

Pro-GNA forces also released several photos of the UAV’s wreckage, which was identified as a Russian-made Orlan-10.

The Orlan-10 has a flight duration of up to 16 hours and an operational range of 140km. The UAV can be equipped with different types of sensors to carry out several missions, including reconnaissance, 3D-mapping, electronic warfare and communication relay.

This was not the first time when this type of UAVs was spotted over Libya. Last April, an Orlan-10 UAV was shot down east of the central coastal city of Sirte.

GNA forces claim that these Russian-made UAVs are being operated by the LNA. However, there is still no solid evidence confirming this.
