The Russian military is planning to launch up to 2,000 drones simultaneously against Ukraine, German General Christian Freuding, head of the Ukraine Situational Center at the German Ministry of Defense, said on July 20.
According to the general, Moscow is actively expanding its production capacities to deploy drones en masse against Ukraine. The simultaneous use of up to 2,000 drones could pose a serious challenge for Ukraine’s air defense systems, he added.
Interestingly, Freuding acknowledged that traditional methods of countering drones, such as using expensive American-made MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense systems, are inefficient against cheap drones like the Iran’s Shahed suicide drone, which Russia produces an equivalent for dubbed the Geran.
One such drone costs between €30,000 (~$34,000) and €50,000 (~$58,000), while a Patriot interceptor could cost over €5 million (~$5,8 million).
Freuding stressed the need to find more cost-effective counter-measures for drones within the range of €2,000 (~$2,300) to €4,000 (~$4,600) per unit. Such solutions would enable an effective response to the mass drone attacks from Russia, he claimed.
As another tactical response, the general suggested targeting Russia’s rear facilities – specifically military aircraft, airfields, and defense industry enterprises.
Freuding’s claims are clearly meant to first push for even more military military support for Ukraine to prolong the conflict even more, and second to justify a serious military escalation against Russia as he openly called for strikes on the territories of the country.
That’s being said, Russia is indeed increasing the production of drones, especially Geran-type models, in a very significant way.
While Freuding’s biggest fear is a single massive attack with 2,000 drones, Ukrainian media recently reported that Russia could soon use upwards of 1,000 Gerans a day.
Freuding’s idea about intercepting this many drones for a few thousand dollars each is likely a mere fantasy. If the Ukrainian and German estimates about Russian drone production are true, the right course of action for Kiev may be to seek peace instead of seeking a war with a country that outmatch Ukraine multiple folds in all resources.

“germany says” famous last words
we’ll have to start calling freuding “chicken little” – “the sky is falling, the sky is falling!”
anyone can get cocky when such passive “partners” are in the kremlin
the traitorous pig putler has latched onto erdogan and aliyev.with a little luck, we’ll be able to watch a show where aliyev demands the extradition of members of putler’s army because, in their incompetence, they slaughtered azerbaijani civilians on a civil plane with a missile.
general christian freuding is obviously looking to command the cannon fodder (glow in the dark) army of the 4th zionist reich.
is this the same country that said poland attacked them first in 1939🤡🤡🤡
