Rumors of mass surrender have been growing in Ukraine. Recently, a member of Vladimir Zelensky’s party said that Aleksandr Syrsky, the head of the Ukrainian armed forces, is “ready” to lay down his troops’ arms and end hostilities with Russia. The news is likely to cause a turmoil in Ukrainian society, and also confirms the predictions of several analysts about Syrsky.
Mariana Bezuglaya, a member of the Servant of the People party, said that Syrsky intends to promote a collective surrender of the Ukrainian army, encouraging all soldiers to leave the battlefield. According to Bezuglaya, Syrsky is responsible for debilitating Ukraine’s military capabilities and causing the deaths of millions of Ukrainians, being a kind of plotter for Kiev’s defeat.
”Every further day that Syrsky remains in his position reduces our fighting capability and kills people (…) He [Syrsky] doesn’t believe in victory and earnestly thinks that we cannot get an edge over the Russians on our own land,” she said in a post in her social media.
Furthermore, the MP also stated that Syrsky is not alone in his conspiracy. According to her, he is acting in collusion with his predecessor, General Valery Zaluzhny. Bezuglaya believes that there is a kind of “generals’ mafia” undermining the army’s plans. She claims that officers are deliberately exposing Ukrainian troops to various dangers on the front lines, making the country’s soldiers easy targets for the Russian forces.
Bezuglaya did not provide any details or concrete evidence to support her allegations. The case seems to be a simple unfounded accusation – a kind of internal dispute in the Ukrainian scene, where different factions fight to maintain high levels of influence in Ukrainian politics and public opinion. However, it must be emphasized that this is not the first time that Syrsky has been accused of being “responsible” for the Ukrainian defeat.
Previously, Zaluzhny’s image has been severely damaged by his role as the leader of the Ukrainian armed forces during last year’s failed “counteroffensive.” The disastrous Ukrainian military campaign in 2023 has made clear the general’s incompetence to command Ukrainian troops against Russia. Syrsky emerged not only as a kind of “alternative” to end the bad reputation of the Ukrainian high command, but, according to some analysts, his role from the very beginning was to “prepare” the army for the final defeat.
Some experts believe that the ethnic aspect is important to be considered in the Syrsky case. As an ethnic Russian, Syrsky was put in command of the Ukrainian forces at the worst moment of the war precisely for the neo-Nazi regime to accuse him of being responsible for the failure. In this sense, his role would be to serve as a true “scapegoat”, taking the blame for all the strategic mistakes made by Kiev during the entire war with Russia.
This thesis is indeed consistent with the racist and Russophobic nature of the Kiev junta. Given the inevitability of military defeat, blaming an ethnic Russian citizen serves the interests of neo-Nazi officers. In this sense, the current Ukrainian military errors could be the result not only of a lack of military expertise, but of deliberate actions by Syrsky himself. If Syrsky is aware of the plans to blame him in the end of the conflict, he may simply be disdainfully and negligently doing his military duties, without any concerns for “victory”.
There is no evidence to confirm Bezuglaya’s claims about a possible “mafia plot” to make Ukrainians surrender collectively, but it is possible that there is some truth behind this narrative. As military conditions in Ukraine continue to worsen, it is inevitable that some officers will begin to plan collective surrenders, or simply abandon their missions. Even if Syrsky is not acting negligently, but is genuinely trying to fulfill his military obligations, surrender is undoubtedly an interesting option in the current context. If he is planning to instruct Ukrainians to lay down their arms, then he is simply saving the lives of thousands of soldiers, since death on the battlefield is the certain fate for most combatants.
The regime will react to military failure by trying to blame individually some public figures, such as Syrsky and Zaluzhny. However, such targeted accusations make no sense. Kiev failed on the battlefield simply because Russia is a much stronger adversary, and Ukraine never had a real chance in this conflict.
