Four Israeli soldiers were killed and five others were wounded when a building they were operating in was hit by a blast in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on June 6.
Two of the slain soldiers were serving in the ranks of the elite Maglan commando unit and Yahalom combat engineering unit.
According to an initial IDF probe, the soldiers entered the building to clear it and search for tunnels. However, the building was booby-trapped and the explosion caused the structure to collapse on the soldiers, killing the soldiers and wounding the others, including one seriously.
In a separate incident from June 6, a reservist with the 646th Paratroopers Brigade was moderately wounded by a mortar impact in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood in the northern part of the Strip, the military said.
The deaths brought the number of Israeli troops killed since the start of the large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza, codenamed “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” to ten.
Earlier this week, four Israeli soldiers were killed in Gaza. On June 2, three soldiers from the Givati Brigade’s Rotem Battalion were killed when their vehicle was struck by an explosive device in Jabalia in northern Gaza. The very next day, June 3, a soldier from the 6646th Battalion of the elite 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade was killed in a firefight in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood, also located in the northern part of the Strip.
Not all recent attacks were carried out by the Gaza-ruling Hamas Movement. In recent days, the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, shared three videos showing attacks on Israeli troops in different parts of the Strip.
Israel launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots last month after calling up tens of thousands of reservists. Currently, five divisions are operating in Gaza.
The IDF says that it aims to occupy 75 percent of Gaza within two months. More than two million Palestinians will be crammed in three isolated small zones in the southern, central and northern parts of the Strip by the end of the offensive.
The resistance in Gaza is again picking up momentum. Still, the IDF will not likely back down. In recent weeks, several attempts to reach a new ceasefire and hostage deal failed.
