Fresh Photo Shows Russian OFZAB-500 Incendiary Bombs With UMPK Kits

The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) has expanded the use of OFZAB-500 fragmentation high-explosive incendiary bombs equipped with the UMPK (Russian: УМПК; Унифицированный модуль планирования и коррекции, Unified gliding and correction module) kits.

A photo showing bombs of this type equipped with the kits surfaced online on February 14. The bombs were loaded onto what appears to be a Su-34 fighter bomber.

The OFZAB-500 was designed to engage light armored and soft-skin targets, POL (petroleum, oil, and lubricants) depots and other targets through the combined blast, fragmentation and thermal effects.

The UMPK kit, developed by the Bazalt Design Bureau, converts traditional unguided bombs into precision-guided glide munitions to provide greater range and accuracy. It is a welded structure featuring two deployable wings and tail control surfaces. It functions as a self-contained flight assembly to which an aerial bomb is attached.

The maximum attack range depends on the altitude and trajectory of the aircraft at the moment of release, but it is generally reported to be around 80 kilometers.

The kit is equipped with a navigation module that uses signals from both an inertial navigation system and a jam-resistant Kometa-M GLONASS antenna.

The OFZAB-500 was first tested with the UMPK in 2024. Back then, a video showing an airstrike carried out with one such bomb surfaced online.

The VKS expanded the use of UMPK-equipped OFZAB-500 bombs in the special military operation zone recently, mainly against the trenches of Kiev forces. UMPK-equipped FAB-500M-62 general purpose high-explosive bombs are still, however, being used against other types of targets.
