On January 15, the France 2 TV-channel showed a reportage about the French Special Forces, supporting Iraqi troops in the battle for Mosul. According to the TV-channel, 200 French servicemen have been staying on the territory of the country already during two years and operating there along with the Iraqi elite forces.

As the TV-channel reported, the main task of the French Special Forces in Iraq is intelligence service. They stay near the frontline and operate dangerously close to positions of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, however, never directly act on the frontline. French servicemen assist to pinpoint targets for Iraqi troops, as well as search, analyze and destroy explosive devices and weapons, left by the IS in the liberated areas.

The France 2’s reportage allows us to see a terrorists’ sniper room and a labyrinth, consisting of interconnected tunnels and damaged houses with special marks on walls, discovered by French servicemen. Reportedly, such labyrinths allow IS terrorists to move all over the city, escaping notice of the Iraqi Forces.

According to the reportage, the French Special Forces not only operate in neighborhoods of Mosul city, which have already been liberated from the terrorist group by the Iraqi Forces, but also support the Peshmerga forces, stationed near Mosul, setting up their positions near Peshmerga and providing them with information, using unmanned aerial vehicles. As the TV-channel reported, French military needs just ten days to analyzed information, received with their drones.

The second part of the reportage shows the French Special Forces’ soldiers, operating outside Mosul. The TV-channel does not disclose where exactly the French Special Forces were showed, but notes that they moved to the direction of Syria, as well as mentions that French soldiers are on a secret mission on the Raqqa-Mosul axis.

Syrian Troops??? or Iraqi troops?

Undisclosed numbers are also on the ground inside Syria with SDF Operation Euphrates Wrath as AT training teams and JTAC/Tacair calling in airstrikes.

It ‘s all about NATO forces using Syria as a live fire training ground, testing out weapons, tactics etc.. – US/GB/FR are all on a very steep learning curve evaluating and modifying their outmoded warfighting doctrines.
