On October 14, fighting between the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Hamas Movement intensified in the Gaza Strip, while Hezbollah resumed attacks from southern Lebanon.
Hamas military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, said that one of its units broke through the separation fence to the Khan Yunis city and attacked a gathering of the IDF, destroying at least three military vehicles.
Israel media confirmed that a vehicle was hit by an anti-tank guided missile Eshkol Regional Council and said that one person was wounded. Later, the IDF said that it had targeted an ATGM unit near Gaza.
Several Israeli settlements, military positions and deployment points around Gaza were also shelled by Hamas and its allies. In addition, two rocket attacks targeted Tel Aviv city and the nearby Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel.
From its side, Israel launched dozens of strikes against Gaza from air, ground and sea. The IDF said that one of the strikes killed Murad Abu Murad, the head of Hamas’s aerial array, and another killed Ali Qadhi, a company commander in the group’s elite Nukhba unit.
The recent wave of strikes on Gaza lead to heavy human losses. The Hamas-run health Ministry in Gaza, said in its most recent update that 2,215 Palestinians have been killed and another 8,714 have been wounded since fighting began on October 7. At least 256 were killed in the last 24 hours only.
Meanwhile, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement that nine captives, including four foreigners, were killed in recent Israeli strikes in Gaza. The announcement came after the group said that 14 captives it was holding were killed by the IDF in two previous statements, raising the total number of hostages killed to 23.
More than 100 Israelis were captured by Hamas during the initial surprise attack on October 7. The death toll from the attack is said to have exceeded 1,300. However, Israeli officials are yet to provide any specific numbers.
The IDF, who ordered the evacuation of northern Gaza two days ago, is currently amassing its forces for an invasion of the Strip. Videos posted on social media on October 14 showed thousands of Palestinians fleeing towards southern Gaza under heavy strikes as well as dozens of main battle tanks and armored personnel carriers moving into offensive positions near the Strip.
Meanwhile in the Lebanon front, heavy clashes broke out following an attack by Hezbollah. The group said that it had targeted five sites of the IDF, al-Radar, Ruwaisat al-Alam, al-Samaqa, Zibdin and Ramtha, in the occupied Shebaa Farms with mortar shells and guided missiles. The IDF responded with artillery fire. No losses were reported by either side.
A day earlier, Hezbollah vowed to punish Israel following a strike that killed a journalist and wounded six others in southern Lebanon. Later, the IDF launched several drone strikes against targets of Hezbollah after claiming to intercept three drones and an anti-aircraft missile over Israel’s northern region. A group of Palestinian fighters were also struck by an Israeli drone.
Hezbollah will likely escalate its attacks against Israel in the coming days. Nevertheless, the situation will be far more serious in Gaza, where a major battle will break out once the IDF moves its troops to invade the strip.
