On December 9, Moscow and Washington held an exchange of prisoners. Russian Viktor Bout returns to Russia, and American basketball player Brittney Griner went to the United States.
Victor Bout returned to his homeland after 14 years in prison in the United States. He was arrested in 2008 in Thailand at the request of the United States. He was accused of illegal arms trafficking and supporting terrorism. In 2010, Bout was extradited to the United States, in 2012, the court sentenced him to 25 years in prison. The Russian did not admit his guilt.
He was exchanged to Brittney Griner who is a two—time Olympic champion and what is not less important, she is a lesbian. Since 2015 she has played for the Russian club in Yekaterinburg. In February, 2022, she was detained at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport with cartridges for vapes with hashish oil in her hand luggage. The basketball player claimed that a doctor prescribed cannabis to her. The Russian court sentenced Griner to nine years in prison for drug smuggling. In November, she was transferred from the pre-trial detention center to a colony.
This exchange is an important Russian victory.
The exchange took place on December 9 at Abu Dhabi airport. The Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, clarified that the UAE capital was chosen for the exchange for reasons of convenience of logistics.
Both Bout and Griner were pardoned by Washington and Moscow. They will not serve the rest of their sentences.
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, said on Twitter that he had talked to Griner, she was fine, and she was on her way home.
Mr Bout came to Moscow at night.
The successful exchange was the culmination of intense negotiations that have been going on for the past few weeks.
The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that Washington categorically refused to engage in a dialogue on the exchange of Mr Bout for a long time.
“As a result of the efforts made, it was possible to agree with the American side on the organization of the exchange of V.A. Bout for B. Griner,” the report reads. “A Russian citizen has been returned to his homeland.”
On November 19, White House press Secretary said that the Russian authorities had not conducted serious negotiations on prisoners in recent months.
The last prisoners exchange between Russia and the United States took place in April. The Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko was exchanged for a US student Trevor Reed.
On July 28, CNN published an article based on the Biden administration’s statement that the White House had previously sent a substantial proposal to Moscow to exchange Viktor Bout for Paul Whelan, who is serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage, and basketball player Brittney Griner.
Mr Bout is obviously a more valuable person that the basketball player. Despite the fact that he has been in an American prison for a very long time and could provide no more valuable information if he had any, Washington did not agree to launch any negotiations on his release and exchange for years. Victor Bout became an important symbol not only in Russia but worldwide. He became a valuable figure in the global politics. During his time in US prison, Bout even became an authoritative leader among American prisoners.
Russia has been seeking the release of Viktor Bout for almost 15 years.

The return of Griner is presented as a big victory for the US. The sex, colour of the skin and sexual preferences of Brittney Griner became a lifebuoy for President Biden, whose popularity is fading. Immediately she was sentenced in Russia, the Western media made Griner another symbol of Western values. Griner was seen on the front pages of newspapers for a long time.
The case of the second US prisoner Paul Whelan convicted of espionage in Russia already lost its popularity in the US. However, in fact he is a more valuable figure than Griner. The American side could not offer the Russians a prisoner worthy of an exchange for Whelan.
After the exchange of Bout for Griner, US President Joe Biden said that Washington had not forgotten about Whelan and was working on his release. That is a clear sign that the US team lost the bargaining.
In his turn, Paul Whelan told CNN that the administration of US President Joe Biden did not make enough efforts to free him. “I am very disappointed that more has not been done for my release”
Whelan was detained in Moscow in December 2018. He was charged for espionage. According to investigators, Whelan worked for US intelligence services: as an intelligence officer, he collected secret information in Russia and tried to recruit FSB and Defense Ministry employees. Whelan pleaded not guilty. In the summer of 2020, he was sentenced to 16 years of strict regime.
Paul Whelan’s lawyer admitted that his client could be exchanged within one to two months, NBC reports.
At the same time, the decision to exchange Bout for Griner from the Russian side may be a signal that the parties may be ready for negotiations on a wider range of issues of mutual interest. This may entail a dialogue between Russia and the United States on some security issues or on other aspects of relations that go beyond the exchange of their citizens.
