Extremists Planned to Attack Russian Military Base in Kazakhstan

The extremists detained during the special operation in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan were planning an attack on a Russian military unit near the city of Balkhash, the RIA news agency has reported, citing the source close to the structures of the Kazakhstan’s National Security.

Russian and Kazakhstan law-enforcement bodies have not yet officially confirmed this information. The National Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NSC) declined to comment this data.

The day before, chairman of the NSC Vladimir Zhumakanov informed about the detention of six Islamists during the special operation in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region. He said that all detainees are residents and citizens of Kazakhstan.

Several days earlier, on June 26, Kazakh special services clamped down on the activities of some radical group that planned attacks using improvised explosive devices in Balkhash and Gulshat in the Karaganda region, the press service of the National Security Committee reported. During the arrest one of the members of the group made a suicide bombing.
