Exclusive interview with Othman Abdujialil, Minister of Health in the Government of National Stability of Libya, by Piero Messina
Is it possible to explain the future of Libya in five words? Maybe. Geopolitics can become a simple discipline if clear and precise objectives are identified. Five words, therefore, for the future of Libya, a nation that since 2011 has been waiting for a democratic, political and social rebirth.
“Five words, I hope, of course, Libyans will realise, and I think they do. Libyan people need unity, peace, prosperity, and to come together and unify their efforts. Libya has all what is needed to become a developed country, and we have that quality. So, my message to the Libyans is just let’s get together and put all these qualities or these ingredients together and really have a nice meal after that. For the international community, my messages is really please Libya is a very fertile country. It can be a very good place. For, you know, making business, doing a collaboration, work in a very peaceful way. Libyans are, by nature, are very warm and welcoming people. What we need from the international community is just cooperation and more cooperation”.
These are the words of Othman Abduljialil, currently Minister of Health for the Libyan Government. Abduljialil is a medical geneticist, he spent many years of his life studying abroad, perfecting his profession in Canada, obtaining a master’s degree from Mc Gill University in Canada, and is also a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tripoli.
Before assuming the responsibility of the Minister of Health, Abduljialil was the head of Education for the government led by Fayez Al Serraj. At the helm of the education sector, he established several scholarship and partnerships with foreign countries, including the European Union, to allow Libyans to study abroad. He initiated a deep reform of the school system, managing to bring about substantial improvements, awaited by Libyans for decades.
Now, it is time for Libya to turn the page. Abduljialil is running for Prime Minister in the upcoming elections.
”Yes, as a matter of fact, I am one of the candidates for the prime minister position that will take place in the next government, I think in the next few months. And these are the dreams I’m carrying. I really think from my experience since 2017 when I started with the government as minister of education and now minister of health, I have been with so many, three different governments. I worked in the west of Libya, in the east of Libya and in the south and everywhere. I see all the flaws that are in the system and what is the solution for them. I see it. I see clearly. So, of course, I get the opportunity. I really strongly believe that we have a clear strategy. To drive Libya within a few years to stability, to prosperity, and of course what is most important is to drive the country to a fair and transparent election”.
Libya’s challenges are manifold and there is no more time to waste:
“ Libya, of course, I think it is a very good candidate as a country to be a very developed country. All the criteria to have Libya as an advanced and developed country are there. The location, the geography, the population, the level of education among its citizens, the resources, the natural resources it has. So we have all the criteria that make Libya in a very good position. Now the question is why it is not as we see it. So these are the challenges as you describe it. I think all it needs, it needs really good leadership. In a way that those who are in charge really understand what is needed to bring Libyans together to try to improve all the services to the public and also to modernise them in a way so you give opportunity to all the beings. Whether young, old, males or females, you make them participate in developing their countries. This is, you might see this is the natural thing, but unfortunately I see so many Libyans, they have so many big opportunities, they have all the qualities that they should, but they really don’t get that opportunity. So it is really, I think, what is needed is strong leadership, open-minded leadership, experienced leadership to drive the country to go through this. There are, there will be a lot of challenges, of course, but as I mentioned, Libya because of its geographical location, we are very close to Europe. We can build a very strong relationship with all Europeans or even like the rest of the world to gain the experience they have in certain areas and we can overcome all the obstacles that we see today. I really see it as possible and it is possible within a very short period of time providing that we have people in charge or leaders who have vision. Who have the strength to do it and open-mindedness to collaborate with the rest of the world”.
Minister Abduljialil’s appeal for unity takes on greater value if we look at the tensions that are being recorded in the western area of the country. For days, in Tripolitania there have been clashes between factions linked to Prime Minister Dbeibah and militia groups rooted in the territory. The height of tension was reached with the killing of Abdel Ghani Al-Kikli, feared and powerful leader of the Gheniwa militia. According to local media reports, Brigade 444, loyal to the Libyan Government of National Unity (GUN), “played a central role in last night’s events”. The clashes see Brigade 444 opposing the Rada Militias. The clashes between fighters from the two armed groups are still ongoing in large areas of the Libyan capital, in particular “in residential neighborhoods and have increased in violence in recent hours, while a state of panic and fear prevails among residents”, according to what local sources told “Al Wasat”. The clashes that resumed yesterday mainly occurred in the area of Souq al Juma between the Rada militia, led by Abdul Raouf Kara, and the 444 and 111 brigades. The violence also took place in the areas of Al Harabeh, Al Dahmani and Hay al Andalus, where most of the embassies and diplomatic missions are located.
as i said, putler and dump support terrorism and that is why terrorism is spreading.
the leading state sponsors of terrorism in the world are the jewsa, the zio regime itself, the jewk and the jewu. bin laden was on the cia payroll for years. the leader of “isis” in libya was an israeli mossad agent called moshe shekelburger or something similar. all these 0h-so-radical “islamist terror groups” have never lifted a finger against israhell, they only ever attack the enemies of the jewsa and israhell. isis, al qaida, mek, dozens of others, same old story.
