Israeli strikes hit a site in the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus, late on May 2, wounding eight Syrian soldiers and causing material losses, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported, citing a military source.
The unnamed source said that Israeli warplanes launched missiles from over the Golan Heights in northern Israel at a site around 10:05 p.m. local time [7:05 p.m. GMT].
Speaking to Reuters, a security source in the Iran-led alliance that backs the Syrian government alleged that the targeted site was a building, situated just south of the Sayyeda Zeinab Shiite shrine in southern Damascus, that was used by Syrian security forces.
Nevertheless, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition monitoring group, alleged that the building hit by the strikes had been used by members of the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah group as a detention center since 2014.
This was the first Israeli attack against Syria since April 19, when a series of strikes hit radar and air defense sites in the southern governorates of Daraa and al-Suwayda. The strikes facilitated the Israeli attack on an Iranian air base in Isfahan on the same day.
The attack in question was a response to the April 13-14 Iranian drone and missile strikes on two air bases in southern Israel. The strikes were a retaliation for an Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1 that killed several senior members of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip last October, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of the IRGC, Hezbollah and other affiliated armed factions.
Despite taking some losses, war-torn Syria will not likely respond directly against Israel as this could lead to a dangerous confrontation.
