Egyptian Military Lost Five Troops, Killed 23 Terrorists In Recent Sinai Operations (Video, Photos)

On May 11, Egypt announced that at least 23 terrorists were eliminated during recent military operations in the Sinai Peninsula.

In a statement, Col. Gharib Abdel Hafez, a spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces, said that 16 of the terrorists were killed on May 7 and 11 as a result of airstrikes carried out by the Egyptian Air Force. Footage of the strikes were released.

The seven remaining terrorists were killed during clashes with Egyptian troops while attempting to attack a checkpoint on May 11.

Col. Abdel Hafez acknowledged that five service members of the armed forces were killed during the terrorist attack on the checkpoint.

“One officer and four soldiers were killed and two other soldiers were wounded,” the spokesman said in the statement.

Two unnamed Egyptian security officials told the Associated Press that the deadly terrorist attack targeted a checkpoint belonging to the country’s border guards near the city of Rafah in the northern part of Sinai.

On May 7, Egypt announced that eleven service member of its armed forces, including an officer, were killed as a result of a terrorist attack that targeted one of the Suze Canal water pumping stations in western Sinai. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist group released photos documenting the attack on May 10.

Despite the efforts of the Egyptian military and security forces, the security situation in Sinai will not likely improve on the short term. ISIS insurgency in the region may continue for the next few years.
