Egyptian army killed 60 terrorists in northern Sinai

It is reported by the Russian news agency RIA that during a military operation in Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, the Egyptian army eliminated several bases of the ISIS affiliated extremist group “Ansar al-Maqdis Beit”.

It is also reported that the operation was carried out with the use of artillery and military helicopters.

Citing Egyptian state news agency MENA, the Russian media said that the Egyptian army destroyed several terrorists positions in the north of the Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 60 terrorists of ISIS affiliated Ansar al-Maqdis Beit group. The Egyptian agency also added that more than 40 terrorists were also wounded in that attack.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis pledged its allegiance to ISIS in November 2014. The terror group is banned in a number of countries, including Russia.

Terrorism is being observed in Sinai since the army, led by President Abdel Fattah Sisi, overthrew the then Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

Over the past years, militants have been carrying out anti-government activities and deadly attacks, taking advantage of the turmoil caused in Egypt after Mohamed Morsi was ousted by the military in July 2013.
