On December 18, the government-backed Sinai Tribal Union (STU) announced that its forces had conducted a successful operation that ended ISIS presence in the area of al-Ajra’a in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula.

During the operation in al-Ajra’a, STU forces killed two terrorists of ISIS. A third terrorist, who was wounded in a recent airstrike by the Egyptian Air Force, surrendered himself to the tribal fighters who will likely hand him over to Egyptian authorities.

The STU shared photos showing a number of hideouts and vehicles of ISIS which were uncovered and destroyed by its forces in the course of the operation.

STU forces have been operating against ISIS cells in Sinai for a few years now. The tribal forces are not independent. They are directly commanded by the Egyptian military and security forces.

ISIS operations in Sinai slowed down in the last few months as a direct result of the pressure mounted by the Egyptian military, security forces and the STU.

The terrorist group’s insurgency in Saini, which began in 2014, appears to be nearing its end. This does not mean however that the group’s influence in the peninsula will disappear.
