Dutch people are against closer EU ties with Ukraine: report

Although the majority of Dutch public opposed to closer links with Ukraine, they will go to the polls tomorrow to decide whether to back a European treaty which is for stronger ties with Kiev.

On Sunday, Maurice de Hond poll showed that 66 percent will back the ‘No’ campaign, with only 25 percent supporting a ‘Yes’ vote.

For a valid consideration of the referendum 30 percent of the Dutch population eligible to vote must cast their ballots. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called the association agreement the “first step towards EU membership.

According to the Volkskrant newspaper, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands all rejected the idea of Ukraine’s potential EU membership during the five-year negotiation period in 2008-2012.

In March, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Ukraine should never become a member of the EU while also stressing that “in the long-term” Ukraine should develop good and stable relations with Russia.

However, there are allegations that the Pro-referendum rights activists are unable to express their views in any of the mainstream or state-backed media. The referendum initiators are under stiff psychological and physical pressure, however; the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2017 in the Netherlands, as well as a tough stance on the part of the referendum activists, are stifling European Union bureaucracy initiatives.

Dear southfront, you seem to have a problem with reading Dutch. While the Poll shows at most 66% of the people will vote No. The 25% u recite shows the percentage of people who will surely vote on wendnesday. There needs to be at least 30% of voters for the result to be taken into account by the cabinet.
