On August 25, a Turkish combat drone attacked a target in the vicinity of the Kurdish-held town of al-Bayluniyah in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the target was a position of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). No human losses were reported as a result of the drone strike.
This was the fifth Turkish drone strike to target areas held by the SDF in northern and northeastern Syria within five days.
On August 20, two Turkish drone strikes targeted northeastern Syria. The first strike claimed the life of Saladin al-Shihabi, an Iranian Kurdish commander of the SDF. The second strike claimed the lives of four personnel of the SDF, including a commander of the Tell Tamer Military Council.
On August 21, two more strikes hit the region. One of the strikes targeted an official of the SDF’s administrative wing, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. Nevertheless, no casualties were reported.
The recent drone strikes fueled rumors of a near Turkish-led military operation against the SDF in northern or northeastern Syria.
The Turkish military and its proxies carried out three major operations in Syria. The most recent operation, which took place during October of 2019, saw Turkish forces occupying a long strip of land between Raqqa and al-Hasakah in the northeastern region.
A new operation against the SDF will not be possible without an agreement between Ankara and Washington, the main backer of the Kurdish-led group.
