On January 11, a Turkish combat drone targeted a vehicle carrying fighters of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria’s northern region.

The vehicle, an SUV, was passing on the M4 highway, between the town of al-Qamishli and the city of al-Hasakah, when it was struck. Several SDF fighters, who were reportedly wounded in the strike, were taken to a hospital in al-Qamishli.

The drone strike was likely a response to a rocket attack that targeted a base of the Turkish military to the east of the town of Azaz in northern Syria two days earlier. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, four Turkish soldiers were wounded in the attack, which was launched from an SDF-held area.

This was the second Turkish drone strike to hit northern Syria this year. On January 2, a drone targeted an alleged intelligence center of the SDF in the outskirts of al-Hasakah city. Two fighters of the group were killed and a third was wounded in the strike.

Unable to launch a new ground operation in northern Syria due to objection from the United States, the main backer of the SDF, and Russia, Turkey has resorted to its air power in an attempt to deter the group.
