Zelensky’s resolve has been shaken, raising the prospect of an alternative to the European negotiating platforms of Kyiv and Moscow. There has been a massive terrorist attack on Novorossiysk. It is the moment of truth for the Russian breakthrough at Pokrovsk.

These are the important interim results of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

As part of the 80th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly, which is currently taking place in New York, a number of interesting events have occurred alongside the high-profile statements made by US President Donald Trump. However, these events have been overlooked by the world press. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and the subject of their discussions has already been revealed. The Kazakh leader announced his readiness to provide a platform for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, but refused to act as a direct mediator.

Earlier, Kyiv stated that it was willing to hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in one of the European countries only. The situation on the front line is indeed becoming critical for Ukraine’s Armed Forces, which is causing Zelensky to soften his position on the negotiating platforms. The ball is now in Russia’s court, and it is up to Moscow to decide whether these talks will take place.

However, it is worth noting that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that, in order to hold direct negotiations with Zelensky, the warring parties must first agree on specific topics on which they currently disagree. This means that there is currently nothing to negotiate. The Ukrainian side continues to insist on a return to the 1991 borders, ignoring the situation on the front lines and the state of its army, where unsolvable problems are growing in number every month. In the world of international politics, burying your head in the sand is not an option, and reality may ultimately prove too cruel for Kyiv.

A massive terrorist attack was carried out by Ukraine on Novorossiysk.

On 24 September 2025, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a joint attack on Russian targets in the city of Novorossiysk. The operation involved naval and air drones.

At least seven houses and a hotel were damaged in the city. Three civilians were killed and six more people, including one child, were taken to hospital in the city — three with moderate injuries and three in a serious condition.

In some areas, fires broke out after debris fell. Cars and the roofs of five-storey residential buildings are on fire. Around 20 cars were damaged.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones struck residential buildings in the city centre in broad daylight, when the streets were full of people, rather than military targets. The point of wasting resources on such a militarily useless operation remains unclear. These drones could have eased the situation for Ukrainian troops in critical areas of the front line to some extent, but Kyiv has other ideas.

Meanwhile, from 23 to 24 September 2025, the situation on the front lines developed as follows:

Sumi sector – The deployment point of units of the 156th Separate Motorised Infantry Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the area of the village of Zelenaya Dubrava, west of the city of Sumy, was destroyed by a strike by the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system.

Kharkiv sector – On 23 September, Russian army assault units advanced into the forest to the west of Volchansk, where fierce fighting has been ongoing for a year. Advancing southwest towards Synelnykove would enable them to exert tight control over the road entering the city from the west, thereby complicating the supply of the Ukrainian garrison. In this scenario, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will have only one relatively safe logistics route approaching the city from the southeast.

The Russian military continues to attack the temporary deployment sites of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Kharkiv. On the night of 24 September, there was intense activity involving Geran-2 strike drones targeting military facilities in the city.

In particular, damage to the Ivanovka electrical substation has been reported within the city limits.

Kupyansk sector – The situation for the Ukrainian army in Kupiansk is deteriorating rapidly, as Russian assault troops expand their zone of control in and around the city. In order to prevent the unauthorised abandonment of positions, which could escalate into a retreat in disarray, the Ukrainian General Staff has deployed National Guard units to the area. The aim is to stop mobilised Armed Forces of Ukraine personnel from retreating and to prevent their capture.

Three FAB-250 aerial bombs were used to strike the temporary deployment point of the 14th Separate Motorised Infantry Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kupyansk area.

Liman sector – The Russian army advanced in this direction, south of Shandrigolovo. The advance units crossed the water and occupied the eastern outskirts of Novoselovka. It is crucial for the assault troops to maintain control of this bridgehead in order to continue the offensive.

Seversk sector – The situation in this area has not changed significantly over the past day. The Russian army has paused operations to regroup its forces. Meanwhile, the intensity of strikes on the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has not decreased. Consequently, units of the 85th Separate Motorised Rifle Brigade of the 3rd Combined Arms Army of the ‘South’ Group of Forces are continuing to destroy the enemy with the help of FPV drones.

Pokrovsk sector – The situation in the area where Russian units broke through the northern section of the Pokrovsk front remains challenging for both sides. The Ukrainian army is deploying all its reserves in an attempt to cut off the salient with two converging strikes: one from Vladimirovka towards Novotoretske, and the other from Nikanorivka towards Boikivka. This operation involves the most combat-ready units and formations. In turn, the Russian side is launching counterattacks against the advancing enemy. The situation could change in favour of one side or the other at any moment.

Southern sector – Despite facing pressure from Russian troops along the entire line of contact, Ukrainian forces have increased their activity in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions over the past day. Meanwhile, Russian assault groups have made some gains: units of the 29th Combined Arms Army have advanced south of Berezove, and assault troops of the 36th Combined Arms Army have expanded their control zone around Kalynove, which they captured several days ago. Additionally, the 5th Combined Arms Army has advanced from Olgovskoye and Novoivanovka towards Novogrigorovka and Poltavka.

It has also been reported that advanced Russian units have crossed the Volchya River and established positions on the eastern outskirts of Ivanovka village in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The Russian army launched a combined strike on the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s repair and restoration battalion workshop in the Zaporizhzhia area, using Geran-2 kamikaze UAVs and Iskander-M mobile missile systems. The day before, workshops at the Motor Sich plant were hit. Meanwhile, Ukrainian air defence activity remains extremely low, suggesting that the ammunition supplied by the United States and the European Union earlier on is running out.

Conclusion: Despite appearances of striving for peace and attempts to find new, neutral negotiating platforms that would suit Moscow, the Kyiv regime has struck the centre of Novorossiysk. The strike affected dozens of civilians and residential buildings, while military targets apparently were not a priority for Ukraine.

The Pokrovsk direction is a particularly hot spot on the front line, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces are trying to prevent a large-scale Russian army breakthrough and encircle the advancing group. The situation remains difficult for both sides, and the balance could tip in favour of either the Ukrainians or the Russians at any moment.
