The Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia is officially dead. This is certified by the new world record set by the North African country: Tunisia has broken the world record for abstention. Only 8.8 percent of registered voters voted in the December 17 elections. Out of a total of over 9 million voters, only 800,000 of them went to the polls. This is a world record in the negative list of abstainers: 91.2%. Elsewhere, the worst scores: 77% in Algeria (June 2021 elections), 73% in Benin (April 2019), 71% in Egypt (November 2020), 70% in Jordan (November 2020), 62% in Ivory Coast (March 2021). In this register, Morocco did “better”: 50% (September 2021).

President Kais Saied is dragging the country into an abyss. Elected President of the Republic in October 2019, on 25 July last year he gave birth to a progressive coup d’état. After sacking the prime minister, he suspended the prerogatives of parliament. After a year and a half of suspension of democratic rights, after having canceled and rewritten the Constitution, dismantled the Judiciary and hindered the life of political parties, this is the result achieved by the despot president. Saied, from the presidential palace, shows no signs of repentance. He is convinced that the abstention was caused by “masked men” who allegedly prevented Tunisians from voting freely. According to Saied, it would be the same political caste that plundered the state coffers.

Even today, despite the resounding defeat, the President of the Republic appears imperturbable, inflexible: he places the responsibility for abstention on the “masked men” who would prevent millions of people from going to vote. The appeal to the Great Tunisian People (Echaab el-adhim) was not answered and the presidential dream of a new history (tarikh jadid) simply foundered. The victory belongs to the political parties and trade union organizations that had asked to desert the polls. But it is a bitter victory, heralding a new anti-democratic squeeze by a regime that does not want to leave. The political parties, the Destourians and Ennadha (the Islamic movement) ask Saied to resign.

From the United States comes an awkward and ridiculous stance in support of the dictator president: according to the State Department “it is necessary for Tunisia to extend the electoral base”. Of course, narrowing the electoral base in Tunisia seems an impossible task even for those supergeniuses in the White House.

Now a new season opens for Tunisia. While awaiting the run-off vote in February, Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, spokesman for the National Salvation Front, a coalition of 5 parties, including the Islamic Ennhadha, and 5 associations, called on the Tunisian people, organizations, civil society and national personalities to mobilize and a series of protests. Meanwhile, Tunisian society is grappling with a dramatic economic crisis. The country is one step away from famine.

No devout Muslim cares about elections or anything else for that matter.

They are convinced that Allah controls their lives, before and after death.

Illiteracy has not been eradicated.
