The number of people killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since the war broke out on October 7 has risen to 18,608, the health ministry in the Strip, which is run by the Hamas Movement, said on December 13.
Another 50,594 people have been wounded, the ministry added, noting that a total of 196 killed people and 499 wounded arrived at hospitals during the past 24 hours. A large number of victims are still under the rubble of destroyed buildings, according to the ministry.
The health ministry update came amid reports of a massacre in the Shadia Abu Ghazaleh School in the al-Faluja area, west of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.
Al Jazzera aired footage from the school, which was hosting thousands of refugees, showing piles of dead bodies. Witnesses told the Qatar-based news channel that a number of people including women, children and babies were killed “execution-style” by Israeli forces while sheltering inside the school.
“The Israeli soldiers came in and opened fire on them,” a woman at the scene said. “They took all the men, then entered classrooms and opened fire on a woman and all the children with her.”
The woman said there were newborn children among them. “The Israeli soldiers executed those innocent families at point blank,” she added.
Another witness told Al Jazzer that when the fighting was getting heavy and the bombardment was getting more aggressive in northern Gaza “a lot of people from that area left their homes … and started rushing to the school, viewing it as a refuge.”
Other footage posted to social media showed heavy damage in al-Faluja cemetery as a result of Israeli ground operations in the area.
A photo showing dozens of Palestinains who were detained by Israeli troops also surfaced online. Some of the detainees were confirmed to be civilians, including one doctor. The IDF is yet to comment on the photo.

The IDF expanded its operations in northern Gaza in the last two weeks. It also launched an offensive in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Strip. This worsened the humanitarian situation for more than two million Palestinains living there. Still, there is no sign of a near end to the war.
