On July 7, four service members of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were killed and two others were wounded when their vehicle came under attack in the western countryside of Daraa.

The vehicle, a Toyota Hilux pickup truck armed with a 14,5 mm machine gun, was targeted with an improvised explosive device as it was passing near the village of Ain Thakar on a road linking the towns of Nafa`ah and al-Shabraq.

One of the four service members who were killed in the attack was an officer, 1st Lieutenant Ali Mohamad Musa of the SAA’s 112th Brigade.

Following the attack, several units of the SAA and security forces surrounded Ain Thaker and blocked the village’s entrances. Reinforcements, including two battle tanks, were deployed in the vicinity of the village. Six suspects were also arrested.

No group has claimed responsibility for the IED attack, so far. ISIS remains the main suspect. The terrorist group’s cells carried out similar attacks in the western Daraa countryside before.

This was one of the bloodiest attacks on government forces in southern Syria this year. The situation in the region is still unstable, despite the government ongoing efforts to revive the reconciliation process, collect illegal arms and improve coordination with local factions.

SAA needs to continuously improve vehicle quality. toyota technical is consumer grade garbage. Light armoured vehicles from Iran, Russia or China might have resulted in zero casualties.
