The night of August 19-20, 2025, witnessed another large-scale and coordinated wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine, demonstrating a continued campaign to degrade military logistics, energy infrastructure, and command capabilities. The aerial assault showcased a significant disparity in offensive output, with Russian forces launching 93 Geranium/Gerbera unmanned aerial vehicles and two Iskander-M ballistic missiles. In contrast, Ukrainian attempts to retaliate were largely stifled, with Russian air defenses reporting the interception of 65 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over the rear territory, primarily in the Voronezh and Tambov regions, with no significant damage reported on the Russian side.

The first massive waves of Russian strikes were launched on the evening of August 20. The southern Odessa region beared the brunt of assault.
The attack began at approximately 22:00 local time with a high-precision strikes on the outskirts of the city of Odessa. An Iskander-M ballistic missile successfully targeted and destroyed a German-made IRIS-T SLM air defense system located in the Hydroport area. This system was a critical component of Ukraine’s southern air defense network, providing cover for vital logistical nodes in the region. Confirmatory footage showed the complete destruction of one launcher, approximately twelve IRIS-T SL interceptor missiles, and critical, irreparable damage to the system’s multifunctional radar array.
The tempo of the attack intensified with a massive, focused drone raid on the key logistical hub of Izmail in Odessa region. The primary target was the Oil Transshipment Complex and its Triton oil depot, a central facility in the Danube delta for storing and transshipping fuel. Dozens of Geranium drones struck the facility in groups of two and three, with local sources reporting between 30 and 32 explosions. The strikes resulted in the confirmed destruction of two large reservoirs containing over 2,000 tons of diesel and 1,000 tons of gasoline, along with the pumping station and administrative buildings.
The attack also damaged the Panamanian-flagged chemical tanker EXCELLION, which was docked and reportedly fully laden with Azerbaijani petroleum products destined for Ukrainian military needs from Romania. The vessel suffered damage to its superstructure and propulsion, leaving it unable to operate under its own power. The timing of the strike, during active unloading operations, triggered powerful secondary explosions, vividly captured on video from the Romanian side of the border. The operation has effectively crippled a major fuel supply route for Ukrainian forces in the south.
Additionally, Russian strikes reportedly hit the local Villa Forte Ukraine gas distribution station, where a container with equipment caught fire and a gas pipe burned out.
Simultaneously, strikes pounded military targets across the country. In the Sumy region, a precision strike hit an industrial enterprise in the city of Akhtyrka, a facility suspected of repurposing its operations to support military needs.
Further south, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, the city of Pavlohrad was hit, where drone strikes targeted the Pavlohrad-1 railway station’s power supply infrastructure. The attack caused a complete blackout of the contact network on a key rail line, halting military and logistical train movements and forcing a complex re-routing of power.
In the Donbass, Russian drones struck with tactical precision. According to Russian military monitoring sources, a temporary deployment point of the 68th Separate Jäger Brigade was hit near Novoandreevka, resulting in casualties. Another series of strikes destroyed Ukrainian positions in the war-torn Dobropillia area. A separate drone strike hit a former maternity ward within the Dobropillia Central City Hospital, a location evidently repurposed by Ukrainian forces for military use.

A significant tactical success was achieved in Sloviansk, where Geran-2 drones struck a clandestine workshop operated by the Ukrainian 412th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment “Nemesis.” The strike, on a residential property on Rapno-Naberezhny Lane, triggered a massive secondary detonation, indicating the presence of stored explosives, lithium-polymer batteries, and munitions. The facility was a hub for the assembly and programming of FPV drones, and its destruction is a substantial blow to the unit’s operational capacity for reconnaissance and kamikaze attacks.
The Russian military also shared the control footage of a precision strike by Iskander missile on the point of deployment of the notorious 3rd separate assault brigade of Azov nazi militants.
The night’s operations concluded with a strike on the military airfield in Myrhorod, Poltava region. Three drones attacked the base of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade, damaging infrastructure and reportedly destroying an Su-27 fighter jet and an L-39 training aircraft on the ground.
This comprehensive series of strikes underscores a strategic effort to constantly dismantle Ukraine’s ability to fuel its war effort, move troops and supplies, defend its skies, and conduct its own drone warfare campaigns, all while maintaining a significant quantitative advantage in the air.
