On November 11, 2020, two organizations of Cypriot theologians called for the convening of a Pan-Orthodox Council to resolve the question of “autocephaly” of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (a mostly unrecognized pseudo-church organization created under the supervision of the Kiev regime and Constantinople), Orthodoxia.info reported.

Christakis Efstafiu, President of the Association of Theologians (ΟΕΛΜΕ) called the situation regrettable and noted that the Church faces too many challenges and demonstrates signs of division in the times of crisis, which the whole world is experiencing.

He added “people are asking the hierarchy of our Church, the Holy Synod, to finally come together and try to heal this large growing wound.” He said that he believes that in this way the hierarchs will be able to “convey the message to the outside”, and demonstrate not division and selfishness, “which seems to be dominant,” but the church spirit to which one should strive.

The president of the Pancyprian Association of Greek Theologians (ΠΕΕΘ) George Kyriakou said that the schism in the Church occurred due to actions  of the head of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, Archbishop Chrysostom, who decided to recognize the ‘independent’ church of Ukraine (in the course of the policy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople that became the agent of globalism).

Kyriakou emphasized that he fully agrees with Metropolitan Neophyte of Morph, who considers His Beatitude Onuphrius (from the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) to be the canonical Metropolitan of Kiev “from the very beginning, the Ecumenical Patriarchate recognized as such, and was not removed for canonical misdeeds.” He added that “Epiphanius (the head of the OCU), for unknown reasons, is suddenly recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate as the Metropolitan of Kiev.”

He emphasized that this situation does not correspond to the rules of the Orthodox Church, according to which it is impossible to have two metropolitans in the same territory.

The crisis started after Metropolitan Athanasios, together with three other hierarchs of the Cypriot Church, Metropolitans Nikiforos of Kykkos and Isaiah of Tamassos, and Bishop Nicholas of Amathountos, appealed to Archbishop Chrysostomos to immediately revoke his anti-canonical decision to include the name of Epiphany Dumenko in the diptychs of the primates of the Local Orthodox Churches. Now, this decision backfired and triggered a large-scale resistance among the Cypriot Church thus leading to another crisis of the pro-Constantinople group influence in the region.
