The Cuban government on January 6 shared the names, ranks and ages of 32 of its military personnel who were killed during the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States special forces three days earlier.
The personnel, ranging in age from 26 to 60, belonged to the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior. They included colonels, lieutenants, majors and captains, as well as a number of reserve soldiers. Headshots of each one of them were released by state media.
Havana was quick to acknowledge the deaths of the personnel who were deployed in Caracas under an agreement with the Venezuelan government.
“Our compatriots fulfilled their duty with dignity and heroism, falling after fierce resistance in direct combat against the attackers, or as a result of the bombing of the facilities,” an official statement released right after the U.S. operation said.
Among those killed was Colonel Humberto Alfonso Roca Sánchez, 67, who reportedly served as the garrison commander of Punto Cero, where Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro once lived. Another was Colonel Lázaro Evangelio Rodríguez Rodríguez, 62, who is believed to have overseen Cuba’s coast and border guards.

Also on January 6, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said that Cubans were “prepared to give their lives” against any U.S. intervention.
“The U.S. president, displaying a complete lack of understanding about Cuba and repeating the agenda of lies of Cuban-American politicians and other interest groups, blasphemes against and threatens our people,” Rodríguez wrote on X. “Our valiant people, true to their history of struggle, will defend their nation against any imperialist aggression.”
The operation in Caracas was carried out by the U.S. military’s elite Delta Force. President Donald Trump said right after that “a couple of guys were hit,” but a Pentagon official told MS Now on January 7 that the number of wounded was in fact seven.
According to the official, two of the seven are still recovering, while five have recovered from their injuries sustained in the operation dubbed “Absolute Resolve.”
The official noted that an assessment of casualties on the ground was still ongoing and is being led by the U.S. intelligence community.
Venezuelan officials previously told MS Now that more than 70 people were killed in the operation, while other sources put the toll at over 80, including the 32 Cuban personnel.
Just a day after the capture of Maduro, Trump said that the government in Cuba was likely to fall soon, in a clear threat to the country.
“Cuba is ready to fall,” told reporters on January 4 as he flew back to Washington from his extended Florida holiday break. “Cuba now has no income. They got all of their income from Venezuela, from the Venezuelan oil. They’re not getting any of it. Cuba literally is ready to fall.”
Secretary of State Marco Rubio went even further, indicating that the U.S. might be willing to take some action against Cuba.
“I’m not going to talk to you about what our future steps are going to be,” he told NBC’s “Meet the Press” the same day. But, he added, “If I lived in Havana and I was in the government, I’d be concerned.”
Despite this escalation, the U.S. is not likely to move quickly against Cuba. The whole intervention in Venezuela was in the end motivated by the desire to take over the country’s oil reserves, which are the largest in the world. Cuba does not have such attractive resources.
Washington could still attempt to pressure Havana in order to influence some internal change, or even a coup. The chances of such a strategy succeeding are very low, however.
